Entry from: Montevideo, Uruguay Entry Title: "Uruguay's Capital" Entry: "Tuesday, Feb. 9th 2010 Montevideo, Uruguay Our day in Montevideo was somewhat reminiscent of the day we spent here in 2006. We went to the Casa Mario, a leather shop, on the shuttle bus provided by this store. After glancing around we made our way the four blocks to Independence Plaza, the home of the mausoleum of Jose Artigas. Besides this, the only other historic buildings remaining in the square were the Palacio Salvo and the Puerto de la Cuidadeia (Gateway to the City). On the outside of the gate, along the Sarandia pedestrian walkway, there were countless antique/flea market stalls, shops, restaurants, modern stores and the Cathedral Matriz,even a Burger King and a McDonalds. We made a stop at the opticians, and another stop at the barber shop to correct a very bad haircut given in Ushuaia. Thankfully, it was not my hair that had become a topic of conversation and attracted a lot of attention on the ship! We ate french fries and milkshakes for lunch, and then wandered past the Solis Theater and down to the beach. There are 90 miles of beaches in either direction, but only a couple of small ones were visible from the Rambla Bretana.
