T-72 tanks engaging

The armament system is fully stabilised and calculates elevation based on laser ranging but contains no lead computing. Moving sideways from the target or going down hill and firing even with a stabilised system will make the shell move at an equal speed sideways or vertically, making a hit beyond 1km range unlikely. Soviet non-export vehicles compensate for both vertical and horizontal movement with analog ballistic computers. More minor factors such as crosswinds and humidity are not calculated. Air temperature is set manually by a small dial. Effective gun range: 4000 meters with HE-Frag 2100 meters APFSDS [400mm @ 2000 meters] 1800 meters HEAT [550mm] 5000 meters 9K120 Svir [850mm] (only T-72B) Due to limits in dimensions, the stabilisation system of the T-72 is somewhat underpowered and can't cope with sudden direction changes such as vertical drops. The T-72 is a progressive tank. Earliest models used stadiometric rangefinders and armor layout similar to Leopard 1 by having layers of steel separated by pockets of air to dissipate heat rounds. Total steel thickness is about 300mm in the turret. Later ceramic and hardened steel layers were added. T-72A introduced in 1979 has such armor, as well as having the stadiometric rangefinder replaced by a laser rangefinder. T-72B has much thickened armor incorporating tungsten carbide, a material german Ju-87G tank busters used during World War 2 in their 40mm cannon armor piercing ammo. It is harder, has a higher melting ...
